Arcane Spells
A brief definition of Arcane Spells and the Schools of Magic.
Mana
An Arcane spell is defined as any spell or arcane instructions that utilize the sub-dimensional energy stream known as Mana. While the mana stream is open, arcane casters issue "instructions" to the mana stream. A series of instructions that has been tested is commonly referred to by casters as a spell. All Arcane Spells are powered by mana and all arcane practitioners have a some form of connection to mana in order to cast their spells and interact with the mana stream.
Schools of Magic
A spell's functions and how it perform that function is the measure by which they are sectioned into a School of Magic. These schools are less like actual universities and more like fields of study, effectively grouping spells into different realms of interest and natural talent. Casters usually focus on a particular school they enjoy the most but generalists are not unheard of in the ranks of Mages.
Defining the Schools of Magic
The following is a brief explanation on each of the eight schools of arcane magic.
Abjuration
Abjuration spells all fall under the broad umbrella term of Protective Spells. While primarily used to generate energy shields and barriers, many other kinds of spells fall under this category due to their intent to protect the user from harm.
Conjuration
Conjuration spells focus on finding and summoning magic, allowing them to summon various creatures and open portals across the realms. Conjuration also allows for the concentration of elemental energies resulting in the spontaneous creation of Sprites and Elementals of various kinds.
Divination
Divination spells all have something to do with sight, vision, perception or states of awareness. Whether that be glimpses into the future or past, into realms unseen or even into the minds and souls of mortals.
Enchantment
Enchantment spells all deal with enhancing or altering items or equipment. Due to this broad definition they are also some of the most varied spells available.
Evocation
Evocation spells all focus on the sudden creation and projection of matter and particles. These spells are often bright, loud and energy intensive, striking fear into the hearts of non magic users.
Illusion
Illusion spells concentrate on the alteration and projection of light to form complex illusions and on psychically creeping into the minds of sentients to alter their perceptions of reality.
Necromancy
Necromancy is any spell that has anything to do with death or undeath. Most refer to this as the Silent School, its existence is acknowledged as fact but the spreading and use of its spells is considered highly taboo in most mage circles.
Transmutation
Transmutation spells focus on altering and realigning matter to suit the user's needs. They can alter the state of matter and recombine atoms into various ways. These include some of the most practical spells available to a caster.
